Die Stiftung ist eine gemeinnützige, von Chirurgen bestimmte Organisation, welche durch Forschung, Entwicklung, klinische Untersuchung und Dokumentation sowie Schulung den Fortschritt im Bereich Trauma und Krankheiten des muskuloskeletalen Systems bezweckt. Zur Erreichung dieses Zwecks werden Vermögen und Erträge der Stiftung wie folgt unterstützend und fördernd eingesetzt: für die Stiftung AO-Forschungsinstitut in Davos; für die weltweite Verbreitung des AO Konzeptes; für Forschung, Entwicklung, klinische Studien und Dokumentation sowie Schulung.
